The Canary Islands (which belong to Spain, but are much closer to Africa) were formed by volcanic eruptions. Various forms of cactus and little white villages with terracotta tiled roofs cover the mountain side. The ocean is a deep cerulean blue with hints of turquoise just off the beaches. Beautiful.
We didn't do much exploring of the island other than walking (and waddling) along the several beaches near our apartment. Although it's certainly a tourist's destination, the town has it's own unique flavor. I'd describe it as a sort of family-friendly, coastal, and European version of Las Vegas. Lots of nice boutique shops and fountains, large resorts, and an active night life. The palm trees on the streets lit up at sunset and at 11:30, many people were just finishing their dinner.
We loved the Sangria de Cava which we learned was made with champagne instead of red wine. I ate the pinepple and strawberries out of the pitcher and Shane took care of the actual Sangria. He was a happy man.
Mornings were the best cause we slept with the bedroom window slightly open to feel the ocean breeze. Eventually the sound of waves would wake us up and we'd have our coffee and toast with a view out onto the beach. Defnintely hard to beat.
On Easter Sunday we found a little church and the bells were ringing right as we walked up to it. We were happy that we'd arrived just in time for mass to start. But after the opening prayer, we realized the mass was being said in German. Needless to say that was a first for us. Later that day we made our own Easter dinner - A Spanish inspired tortilla with potatoes and onions (a la Shane), and some tri-colored fusili with zucchini, red peppers and spanish style sausage. The weather was so nice that day, we got to enjoy our meal out on the patio.
So Shane is back to his Indian red color, and I look less Irish now with some sun on my face. Even Will seemed to like the sunbathing and paddle ball games on the sand! It was a very special trip... would love to go back one day. The link below will take you to the photos.
